Hanoi is a city best explored on foot. Wander the 36 narrow streets of the Old Quarter, each historically dedicated to a different trade, before crossing to Hoan Kiem Lake at sunrise when locals gather for tai chi. Don't miss the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, the Temple of Literature - Vietnam's first university - and an evening Water Puppet Show, a tradition unique to the Red River Delta. Hanoi is also considered the culinary heart of the north: expect the best bowl of pho and egg coffee you will find anywhere in the country.

Ha Long Bay's thousands of limestone karsts, many topped with jungle vegetation, make it one of the most photographed landscapes in Southeast Asia. An overnight cruise is the best way to experience it: kayak between the towers, explore vast caves like Sung Sot, and watch the sun set over the water from the boat's open deck. Quieter Lan Ha Bay to the south offers the same scenery with noticeably fewer boats, and is included in several of our extended itineraries.

Hoi An's Ancient Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is best experienced on foot or bicycle. By day, browse the covered market and centuries-old merchant houses; by night, the whole town glows under thousands of silk lanterns. Hoi An is also Vietnam's tailoring capital - most visitors leave with custom-made clothing ordered and fitted within 24 hours - and sits just minutes from the quiet sands of An Bang Beach.

Formerly Saigon, Ho Chi Minh City moves at a different pace to the north. Visit the Reunification Palace and War Remnants Museum for a deeper understanding of Vietnam's modern history, then explore the Cu Chi Tunnels on the outskirts of the city. By evening, rooftop bars overlook a skyline that has changed dramatically over the past two decades, while street food alleys just below stay true to tradition.

Sapa's terraced hillsides are at their most spectacular between September and early October, when the rice ripens to gold, though the mist-covered valleys are striking year-round. Treks through the Muong Hoa Valley pass through villages of the Hmong, Dao and Giay ethnic minorities, many of whom still weave and dye textiles using traditional methods. For higher-altitude views, a cable car climbs to the summit of Fansipan, Vietnam's tallest peak.

South of Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta is Vietnam's rice bowl - a flat, green landscape crossed by countless rivers and canals. Early-morning boat trips to floating markets like Cai Rang reveal a way of life built entirely around the water, while smaller canal tours pass coconut candy workshops, orchards and rice paper makers. Homestays here offer one of the most authentic slices of rural Vietnamese life available on any itinerary.
