Getting Around: Transportation Guide

Vietnam's length makes transportation planning part of the itinerary itself. Here's how our tours - and independent travelers - typically move between regions.

Domestic Flights

For covering large distances quickly - Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City, for example - domestic flights are the most time-efficient option, taking around two hours versus over 30 hours by train. Several local carriers operate frequent routes between all major cities.

Trains

The Reunification Express line running the length of the country is a scenic, relaxed way to travel shorter sectors, particularly the Hanoi-Ninh Binh or Hue-Da Nang stretches, the latter crossing the dramatic Hai Van Pass. Sleeper cabins are available for overnight journeys.

Private Transfers

Every Vietnam Travels itinerary includes private, air-conditioned transportation between destinations within a region, with an English-speaking driver or guide, removing the guesswork of local bus schedules.

Getting Around Cities

• Cyclos (bicycle taxis) - a slow, scenic way to see old quarters, mainly for short, touristic rides
• Grab (the regional ride-hailing app) - the easiest and most reliable way to get around cities independently
• Walking - by far the best way to explore compact areas like Hoi An's Ancient Town or Hanoi's Old Quarter

Crossing the street in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City can feel intimidating at first, with a constant flow of motorbikes - the local trick is to walk at a slow, steady, predictable pace and let traffic flow around you rather than stopping or running.
